TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — UPDATE | The tornado watch issued for Sarasota, Manatee, Highlands, DeSoto and Hardee counties has ended.

ORIGINAL STORY | The tornado watch issued for Sarasota, Highlands and DeSoto counties Tuesday morning has been expanded to include Hardee and Manatee counties.

The National Weather Service said a strong area of low pressure over the east central Gulf of Mexico will move across the state on Tuesday. Downpours and gusty winds will be possible all morning, according to WFLA’s Leigh Spann.

“Some of the wind gusts may be strong enough to do some damage, and there’s a low risk of tornadoes,” Leigh said.

According to the National Weather Service, impacts could include strong to severe thunderstorms, windy conditions, hazardous waves, high surf, high rip current risk and eventually cooler and drier air moving in for midweek.

The tornado watch will be in effect through 10 a.m. Tuesday, WFLA’s Leigh Spann said.

There will be fewer showers this afternoon after the front passes through Tampa Bay, and showers and storms are expected to shift inland and southward, the National Weather Service said.

It will be windy with isolated showers tonight, according to the NWS.
