In this week’s Road Rants, Pete says drivers should be schooled about the rules on Wilsky Boulevard near Hillsborough County’s Bellamy Elementary. He points out left turns into the school are prohibitted during drop-off and pick-up times, but drivers ignore the posted signs, and cause traffic jams in the morning and afternoon.
News Channel 8 went to check it out, and saw several drivers making the prohibited left turn, as well as creating their own turn-around by using a “no outlet” road across from Bellamy Elementary. The drivers turning off, and on, to Wilsky Boulevard added to the existing backup.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office tells News Channel 8 that the Wilsky Boulevard traffic jam is an ongoing problem, and while deputies will issue citations to drivers, the primary goal of enforcement near the school is to keep students entering and exiting the school safe.
Hillsborough County Public Works’ Capitol Improvement Plan includes a project to provide better access to Bellamy Elementary, but details of the plan haven’t yet been figured out, and construction wouldn’t begin until late 2021 or early 2022.
The only solution right now: asking drivers to be courteous and mind their manners, like the kindergarteners at the school are being taught to do.
