Figuring out what age a child should be allowed to have a cell phone can spark a debate.

At the same time, school districts like Sarasota County are deciding when students can use cell phones on campuses, given their potential for distraction. Today, the Sarasota County school board is expected to vote on some strict new policies for this fall.

Under the new proposal, Sarasota high school students can only use phones between classes, during lunch, or under supervision. Middle schoolers can only use them while they’re supervised and elementary students can’t use phones at all. Hearing devices like air pods will also be banned during class.

Public input is welcome at a workshop today from 10 A.M. until 2 P.M. The final vote will happen at 3 P.M.
