PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – It’s been 10 months since Roxie Creel was scammed by traveling driveway pavers that left her with a mess. Now, she has to spray the driveway weekly with weed killer because grass is growing up through the asphalt.
“We’re just trying to deal with it one day at a time,” Creel said. “We just keep spraying it. That’s all we can do. “
Two roaming pavers, S&M and T&A, swindled her for more than $10,000.RELATED: Paving scams on the rise again in Tampa Bay area
Creel turned to 8 On Your Side. Our investigation into the shady pavers caught the attention of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. Now, after 10 months, this scam has hit a road block. Samuel Morris Stanley and his son-in-law Jesse Cooper were arrested and booked into the Pasco County Jail.
Deputies found $13,000 in Stanley’s pocket and Cooper already owed $4,000 in fines to the Florida Highway Patrol.
“I’m so happy. They need to pay for what they’ve done,” Creel said. “It’s not just me; it’s my neighbors, three or four people down the road, and who knows who else “
There were a lot of others, sheriff’s office spokeswoman Debbie Carter said. This is the time of year paving scams are hot. Carter advises homeowners against hiring door-to-door salesman and to check out paving companies before forking over money.RELATED: Paving scammers show up in Pinellas County
“The license number should be written on the side of the vehicle,” she said. “Research it. If it sounds too good to be true. If they’re telling you, ‘Oh, we have leftover material,’ that’s not true.”
Take it from Creel, it’s not worth the deal you’re offered. “It cost me a fortune to have it put down,” Creel said. “That kind of money doesn’t come easy.”
So she’s thrilled these guys were finally stopped.
“I’ll be happier when the state says, ‘You have to pay restitution and you can’t be here anymore.’ Or they sit their buts in jail. I’d be okay with that, too.”
