PALM HARBOR, Fla. (WFLA) – A woman is dead after a fire at a Palm Harbor gas station, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to troopers, a 66-year-old Palm Harbor woman was driving a 2006 Nissan sedan when she backed into a gas pump at the Circle K on East Lake Road.

The impact caused the gas pump to overturn onto another woman pumping gas. The victim was pinned between the gas pump and her 2018 Honda SUV before the exposed gasoline erupted in flames.

The incident is under investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol.

Nicholas Norrie works by the gas station. He was on break when he heard a loud explosion.

“Loud boom, followed by rattling and popping,” Norrie said. “Shook the building, I ran out to see, and I saw fire coming from the gas station.”

Hours went by before tow trucks moved the Honda and charred pump. By 11:00 p.m. crime scene tape still wrapped the perimeter. As this investigation grows, hearts are heavy in the community.

“Breaks my heart,” Norrie said. “I just saw a lot of smoke and the flames and it was really thick, emergency personnel running all over, the smoke was so dense I couldn’t see.”

FHP Public Affairs Officer Sergeant Steve Gaskins says any charges are pending their investigation.
