A drunk driver was arrested after he allegedly crashed into parking poles while dropping a child off at Wesley Chapel elementary school, authorities said.

Joshua Philip Starr, 39, was arrested for child neglect and DUI with a person under 18, according to an affidavit.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office responded to a vehicle crash in the parking lot in front of Wiregrass Elementary School, 29732 Wiregrass School Road.,Tuesday morning.

School officials said Starr’s Cadillac had struck three yellow parking poles, which separated the sidewalk from the parking lot.

Starr told deputies he was reaching into the back seat of the vehicle to get his child’s backpack when the crash occurred. He said he had taken a Xanax but hadn’t had anything to drink in the past 12 hours, the affidavit states.

Deputies said Starr failed field sobriety exercises and exhibited glassy eyes. His speech was also slurred and he had a breath test reading of .239 and .248 BRAC, above the legal limit of 0.08.

The child told deputies Starr had been “walking into walls,” at the house all morning. He also said Starr advised him not to wear a seatbelt since they weren’t traveling far. The boy said the crash caused him to hit his head on the back of the seat, which caused pain.

Starr was booked into the county jail. His bond was set to $5,000, according to the report.
