Mexico Beach is considered ground zero of Hurricane Michael. Nearly category 5 strength winds and storm surged leveled many homes throughout the city. Many of the homes that were not knocked down sustained extreme damage.
On Wednesday, many homeowners were taking a look at their properties for the first time. Mexico Beach Mayor Al Cathey estimates between 80-85% of homes will need to be demolished.
Residents say they are determined to move forward and build the city back up.
“My neighbors and I want to rebuild,” said Mike Jolley. “Mexico Beach is a great little community.”
There is a National Guard checkpoint as you approach Mexico Beach. Only homeowners are allowed through the checkpoint for now.
