A new section of express lanes on the Veterans Expressway from Gunn Highway to Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa opened Wednesday.
Construction on the express lanes marks the completion of the Florida Express Lanes project. The Veterans Expressway now has express lanes southbound from Hutchinson Road to Memorial Highway, and northbound from Hillsborough Avenue to Dale Mabry Highway.

Customers using the express lanes must have an active SunPass or other interoperable transponder. Cash or TOLL-BY-PLATE isn’t an option. Those motorists will pay the same toll rate as the general use lanes. Dynamic tolling, also known as congestion-based tolling, will begin later this year. That means that the toll rate will vary based upon the number of vehicles using the express lanes at any given time.
Motorists who use the express lanes without a transponder will be considered in violation of the lanes, and will receive a violation notice sent to the registered vehicle’s owner that includes all toll charges in the express lanes, plus a $2.50 administrative fee and an additional $25 for each day the vehicle violates the express lanes.
If the vehicle owner doesn’t pay all of the charges after the second notice, a hold will be placed on the license plate registration.
The express lanes are only open to two-axle vehicles. Trailers or boats aren’t permitted, regardless of the type of vehicle towing them. Drivers who enter the express lanes towing a trailer or boat will be subject to additional fees.
