HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) — An Apollo Beach man was arrested after he intentionally crashed into a deputy’s patrol car along Interstate 75, according to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Deputies say, Kasey Mitchell, 34, of Apollo Beach drove up alongside an HCSO deputy’s car in the parking lot of the Reach City Church and said that he had recently been in a physical altercation with a family member at a home in Apollo Beach.

Deputies told Mitchell he would not be able to leave, as he was being detained. However, Mitchell did not comply, started his engine and attempted to drive away. A deputy deployed his agency-issued Taser towards him which was ineffective, and Mitchell drove away.

When Mitchell fled into Pasco County, troopers made an unsuccessful attempt to stop him. Further up the road, authorities said Mitchell intentionally collided with an FHP K-9 Trooper twice, successfully avoided two deployments of spike strips and a PIT maneuver.

When the chase entered Hernando County, one Trooper successfully performed another PIT maneuver and stopped Mitchell.

Authorities added that Mitchell then attempted to flee on foot but was stopped by an FHP K-9 shortly after.

“Using a car as a weapon to attack one of our deputies is reckless behavior. It is unconscionable and inexcusable and will not be tolerated here in Hillsborough County,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Thankfully, our deputy is okay, and this suspect is going to jail, which is where he belongs. I want to thank our law enforcement partners with the Florida Highway Patrol for taking this man into custody. He will now face charges in multiple jurisdictions.”

Mitchell was arrested and charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer with additional charges pending.
