GREAT LAKES, Ill.  (WKRG) –The father of an 18-year-old Navy recruit who died in boot camp confirms that the young seaman recruit was a Mobile native and a Baker High School graduate.

Kelsey Nobles passed away Tuesday after collapsing. Doctors say she went into cardiac arrest.  

“She just passed out after her last PT (fitness exam) and couldn’t be revived,” Harold Nobles told WKRG.

Nobles says the young woman had the biggest heart and “was just full of energy.”

“She would give anyone anything, her last her dollar,” he said. “She was the sweetest soul. That’s the best way I can describe her.”

Nobles says the Navy promises a full investigation. This is the second death under similar circumstances at the Navy boot camp in Great Lakes, Illinois in the past few months. 

Because of that, Kelsey Nobles’ father has questions.

“For me, I’m just like – what’s wrong? These young people are so excited about serving their country and going into the military. Are they doing enough to check them? Does physical testing need to be more in-depth?” Nobles wondered.

But at the same time, he says, they are just focused right now on getting her home and grieving first.

Baker High School released the following statement on the death of Nobles:

Kelsey Miranda Nobles was an outstanding student at Baker High School.  A young lady of outstanding character, Kelsey was hardworking, responsible and humble.  She always possessed a positive attitude and a sweet, mild spirit.  Teachers have shared fond memories of Kelsey as an organized student who was always delightfully mature. She was very conscientious and participated enthusiastically in all class discussions. Kelsey’s academic diligence earned her an Advanced Diploma with Honors Endorsement along with numerous collegiate scholarship offers. 

Friendly and outgoing, Kelsey was highly respected and admired by her classmates, teachers and peers.  She made a remarkable impact on the Class of 2018 as well as Baker High School.  Kelsey will be greatly missed.
