ST. PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) – With our growing aging population, finding ways to keep our loved ones in their homes longer is a big priority. One St. Petersburg woman has created a business to help. Arlene Grosso and her daughter, Denise Tomey, have started their own company called Access and Design.
This dynamic mother-daughter duo offers safety solutions to help anyone with physical or aging challenges. It was the death of Grosso’s 100-year-old mother, Adeline, last Mother’s Day that prompted her to start the company.
“I feel like I failed my mother in ways,” says Grosso whose mother suffered from dementia. “They thought it was best she went into the health center and eventually the memory care center which was attached to her assisted living home.”
Looking back, Grosso wishes her mother could have stayed in her own home longer. That would have made her happier.
“She constantly said just take me home, take me home. Like most of the people there, that’s all they want to have is their own familiar surroundings.”
That experience lead to Grosso’s new calling to help others remain in their own homes as long as possible. People like Dale and Kay Huepenbecker of St. Petersburg. Dale suffered a stroke a few years ago and only has limited use of his right side.
Grosso and Tomey are offering solutions to help make navigating the Huepenbeckere’s home easier.
Grosso says “The caregivers are frustrated because they don’t know what’s out there. Our main goal is to educate the caregivers on so many different things that can be of assistance to them.”
