A powerful image posted to the Florida National Guard Facebook page shows a helicopter being blessed before taking off for a day of Hurricane Michael response operations.

The photo, taken by SSG Shonnah Adams, was posted on Sunday. SSG Adams captured an unidentified Florida National Guard chaplain blessing the helicopter as the sun rises in the background.

Sunday marks one week since Gov. Rick Scott activated guardsmen to begin preparing for what would eventually become the powerful and destructive Hurricane Michael.

Gov. Scott initially called on the Florida National Guard to activate 500 guardsmen to help with the planning and logistics of a response operation. By the time Michael made landfall as a strong Category 4 hurricane on Wednesday, the National Guard had activated 3,500 soldiers and airmen. As of Saturday night, the total number of activated members stood at 4,000.

The governor’s latest update on the hurricane response says the Florida National Guard is engaging in “a multi-agency effort to conduct humanitarian and security missions” in the areas impacted by Michael.

“Our soldiers and airmen are providing critical capabilities to include road clearance, communication systems, and the delivery and distribution of life-saving supplies,” the governor said in a statement.
