Should teachers be able to carry guns on school campuses? It is one of the more controversial recommendations from the safety commission formed in the wake of the Parkland school shooting.  

“No one wants to put well-trained people on campuses with guns but we must,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, who is on the commission and believes one good guy with a gun on campus is not enough.

Nikoloas Cruz is accused of going on a murderous rampage, killing 14 students and three staffers at Stoneman Douglas High School.

“The bad guy had already shot 21 people in a minute and 41 seconds. So you’ve got to have multiple well-trained people on campus,” Sheriff Judd said.

In a 446 page report released this week, the commission is recommending having armed, trained teachers, among other security measures.

“This is teachers who volunteer and want to be armed, and pass background, psychological, and all the training,” said Sheriff Judd.

“Even if they’re willing to volunteer I think this is too much to ask of our teachers,” said Jennifer Sabin, who is a former teacher and a parent who opposes putting guns in the hands of teachers.

“I don’t think we can know beyond a shadow of a doubt that teacher will always be able to make the right choice,” Sabin said.

The report is now in the hands of the governor and the legislature.
