WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WFLA) — A month after a man was mysteriously shot and killed in Winter Haven, his family is asking for help finding his killer.

The family of Jimmie Lee Rogers Jr., Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird and homicide detectives made a plea for people to come forward with information about the case.

“Not a day goes by that I don’t miss him. He was a good person and did not deserve this,” his aunt Emma Rogers-Williams said.

Rogers was gunned down inside of his car outside of his Ave J NW apartment in the early morning hours of Nov. 18, 2016.

Detectives took to the streets Monday to begin distributing fliers and yard signs throughout the community, in hopes of garnering additional tips.

“This family lost their loved one right before Thanksgiving,” said Chief Charlie Bird. “Our hope is to garner additional leads to give them justice for Christmas.”

On November 18, 2016, at 1:28 a.m., a woman called 911 to report that a car had crashed into the back of her apartment located at 645 Ave I Northwest in Winter Haven.

The caller believed the car had come from an adjacent parking lot. She also reported that she heard gunshots during the same time.

The resident was uninjured and there was minimal damage to the outside of the building.

A second 911 call followed from another resident in the area who also reported hearing gunshots.

When officers arrived, 39 year-old Jimmie Lee Rogers Jr. was found unresponsive inside of the vehicle, with a gunshot wound.

EMS transported Rogers to Winter Haven Hospital where he was declared deceased.

“He left behind two boys that need closure,” his sister Lashonda Rogers said. “We need to know why. Why they took him for no reason. Why they left his boys with no father, and me with no brother.”
