TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – In 2012, Christopher Ponce killed 20-year-old William Angel while driving the wrong way.
He was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter but bonded out jail, cut his ankle monitor off and fled to Spain.
Friday, Christopher Ponce was back in a Hillsborough County courtroom where he pled guilty.
Ponce sat for hours and listened to victim impact statements from the people who loved William Angel the most.
“When you killed William, you killed me. I am not the same man I was then,” said Wade Angel, William’s father.
William Angel’s mother, Lynne, fought through the tears to tell Ponce just how broken she is.
“You shattered my life. A big part of me died July 19th 2012. Most days, I don’t want to live but I have to.”
Angel’s older brother, Wade Jr. is also broken, but forgiving.
“I am not here to bury you. That is not my job. Christ leaves the flock, the 99 to find the one, you are the one.”
The Angel family showed pictures of their son to Ponce to show him the man he killed.
“There’s not an evil bone in his body. William died at the scene because his bones were so shattered they punctured every one of his organs,” said Wade.
The Angel family has always wanted an apology for the loss of their son and Friday, they finally got it.
“I am sorry. I don’t have enough words. I will never have enough words. I am sorry that I took your son, I am sorry that anyone was hurt. I am sorry it wasn’t me,” said Ponce.
Ponce’s mother even apologized for her son’s actions.
“I can’t even imagine what it is like to be you,” she said.
The judge appreciated Ponce’s remorse, but sent him out with one reminder.
“Prison is just as awful as you may have heard it is.”
Ponce will serve at least four years in prison. Once he does that, he will be on probation.
