A Dade City man was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident that left a man dead on Saturday, officials said.

Gregory Germaine Pye, 29, turned himself into police on Thursday and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving a death, a first-degree felony.

Pye is accused of hitting and killing a pedestrian on April 21.

Dade City Police responded to the 36000 block of Blanton Road when they received a report of a hit-and-run with a person lying on the roadway.

Thomas Michael Burdeshaw, 53, of Dade City pronounced dead at the scene. Police believe he had been lying in the roadway before he was struck.

Evidence found at the scene led investigators to Pye’s vehicle, a 1996 Toyota Avalon.  Police have thus far declined to be more specific about the evidence but said a forensic examination of the vehicle has recovered additional evidence believed to be of value to the investigation.

Investigators said Pyle had returned to the scene of the crash and saw Burdeshaw lying on the road, but he did not report the incident to the police or render the necessary aid to the victim, as required by Florida law.

Pyle was transported to the Land O’ Lakes Detention Center to await a bail hearing.
