(WFLA) – There’s certainly a lot of political anger this election season. But, you may have noticed one thing missing: political signs.

Signs usually sprout up in yards and in front of businesses. But, this year, they are few and far between.

The nasty political debate going on now might be why.

“We just worry that they’ll be vandalized, or our home or cars will be vandalized,” said Kristy Dickens, a supporter of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Despite worries about repercussions, Dickens took some signs home for her yard. She is still worried, however.

“Also hate that I can’t put my bumper stickers, that I got from making donations, on my car cuz I worry about my car being vandalized,” she said.

Democrats and Republicans alike are rethinking whether to declare their candidates with signs. “It shows the climate right now in our society, that’s gotten really ugly during this political cycle,” Dickens said.

In Citrus County both political parties report their signs are getting stolen. “We’ve a lot of people calling in, saying that their yard signs are gone on their yards. Or people are calling, accusing us of not putting (Donald) Trump’s signs out, and we say, ‘Well where are you talking about?’ They tell us the intersection and high traffic areas, and we go, ‘We’ve put ’em out multiple times,’” said Michael Moberley with the Citrus County Republican Executive Committee.

Some signs have been defaced, other swiped. “All over the county: people’s yards, private property, road sides, busy intersections; it doesn’t matter,” said Wendy Williams with the Citrus County Democratic Party.

Interest in the election is high. “I’ve never seen anything like it in all the years I’ve been doing this,” Moberley said.
